Samsung Behold II finally gets Android 1.6 update

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Yes, yes, we know you’d rather get Eclair or Froyo — but sometimes you’ve got to be happy with what you’ve got, and this is one of those times. As far as we can tell, Samsung hasn’t budged on its commitment to sunset the Behold II’s upgrade path with Donut, but at least 1.6 is finally trickling into the hands of owners this week via a rolling over-the-air update that should wrap up on the 25th. There are a few bug fixes in the mix, too — so unless you’ve got a rooted Behold II running 2.2 already, you probably want in on this action. Or… you know, dump this inadequately-supported piece for something running 2.1 out of the box.

White iPhone 4 shows up on Walmart.com — will it be available Thursday?

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

walmart-white-iphone-4

We can’t say for sure that it’s an indication that Walmart will be stocking the white iPhone 4 come Thursday, but we find it pretty interesting that all of a sudden the white 16GB model shows up on its retail store as “available in store.” Could this possibily mean that the white iPhone will be available for purchase — at least at Walmart — on D-Day?

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

It’s not just multitasking apps that are hitting the App Store to coincide with the release of iOS 4.0 — Apple has also just rolled out version 1.1 of its iBooks app, which is now available for the iPhone and iPod touch in addition to the iPad (officially, this time). As previously announced, the app now also supports PDF viewing, and boasts a range of other more minor improvements, including new ways to bookmark (complete with syncing across devices), your choice of white or sepia colored pages, more font options and, of course, “greater stability and better performance.”

O2 UK to initially sell the iPhone 4 to current customers only

Monday, June 21st, 2010

o2-iphone4-customers-only

O2 UK announced today that it will only offer the iPhone 4 to current customers when the handset launches on June 24th. The wireless carrier cites extremely limited stock as the basis for this potentially controversial decision. Folks looking to score an iPhone by signing up now with O2 are out of luck as the iPhone will only be offered to wireless, home broadband, and home phone customers who have been with O2 since May 24th, 2010. Current customers will have to travel to a brick and mortar store to snag an iPhone as the incredibly hot handset will not be available online from O2 until the end of July. Once the supply of iPhones is no longer limited, O2 will finally make the handset available to new customers.

Microsoft outs Windows Embedded Handheld platform, Motorola ES400 is the first to get it

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Throughout the course of Windows Phone 7’s paced, deliberate unveiling this year, Microsoft has been very clear on the fact that it doesn’t intend for Windows Mobile — the legacy platform we know today — to disappear, arguing that it’s got several years of life left in it for certain verticals. We’re starting to see that philosophy play out today with the introduction of Windows Embedded Handheld, which is essentially a warmed-over version of WinMo 6.5.3 with some key UI and enterprise-focused enhancements. Microsoft is specifically calling out an “extended support life-cycle” for the platform, a sign that these phones aren’t for the gotta-have-it crowd — instead, the company intends to push these things through corporate fleets where Windows Mobile has traditionally dominated, places where Windows Phone’s flashy stylings and locked-down underpinnings won’t have the same draw.

To that end, Motorola has announced the ES400 as Windows Embedded Handheld’s inaugural device, a rugged smartphone with a 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7627 core, resistive VGA touchscreen, fingerprint scanner, and a trick 3.5G radio that can be user-switched between GSM and CDMA. Naturally, you’re not going to see this on carrier shelves, but the ES400 is being pushed as a solid option for field sales and service, healthcare, and retail use — so if you’re working in any of those fields, you might have a harder time shaking off the last remnants of WinMo than you ever imagined. Follow the break for Microsoft’s press release.

HTC Hero gets Android 2.1 update across Europe

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

It’s been a long, painful, drawn-out process, but it looks like we’re finally closing in on getting everyone with an HTC Hero around the globe covered with Eclair. The company’s European outpost has just posted some details on its Android 2.1 over-the-air update for the 2100MHz 3G Hero sold in most of the continent (including separate builds for units in Nordic countries, Greece, and Ireland), so this should quite a lot of brewing discontent — just in time for owners to develop a raging case of Froyo envy, that is. C’est la vie; time for a Legend, right?
