HTC EVO 4G gets hacked Froyo port, Sense UI be damned

Monday, May 31st, 2010

You know what happens when you give EVO 4Gs to a room full of some of the brightest developers the world has to offer? Well, [expletive] is going to go down, that’s what — so it comes as little surprise that the phone’s already been blessed with a seemingly functional Froyo port, even though neither the phone nor the operation system have even seen a public release yet. The largest distribution of the EVO so far has come at the hands of Google itself, which provided the Android 2.1- and Sense-equipped handsets to attendees of its recent IO conference; a timely upgrade to Android 2.2 has unquestionably been a big sticking point for would-be buyers, though, so it’s good to see that early owners are already hard at work making this happen. Root is naturally required for the 2.2 port to work — and there will undoubtedly be some hurdles to overcome to make this totally usable — but we have full faith in these lovely wunderkinds. Follow the break for video evidence of a Froyo’d EVO in the wild.

AdMob: iPhone OS outnumbers Android 2:1 in the US

Friday, May 28th, 2010

According to AdMob’s April 2010 Mobile Metrics Report, the number of iPhone OS devices in the US outnumber the amount of Android devices by a ratio of 2:1. AdMob estimates that for all of the 8.7 million Android smartphones in the US, there are 10.7 million iPhones and 18.3 million iPads and iPod touches. Worldwide, AdMob reports that there are 11.6 million Android devices compared to 27.4 million iPhones and 13.4 million iPads and iPod touches. Perhaps the most interesting facet of AdMobs report is just where the distribution of each OS is most prevalent. 75% of Android devices are found in North America, compared to 12% in Asia and 11% in Western Europe. The iPhone proved to be most popular in North America with 49%, followed by Western Europe at 28% and Asia at 14%. Switching gears, the largest number of ad requests the world over came from iPhone OS devices with 42%, down from 46% last month. Android stood still at 25%, while Symbian and RIM took up the third and fourth positions with 2% and 1% gains. In the United States, Android bested the iPhone OS for the second time having not moved from its 46% share. iPhone OS traffic dropped to 38%, while third place RIM gained 2% with a total of 7%. Palm’s webOS held firm at 3%.

HTC Droid Incredible disappears from Verizon’s website (Updated)

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

We’re not too sure what’s going on here, but all of a sudden finding a HTC Droid Incredible for sale has become virtually impossible. No longer proudly on display on Verizon’s homepage, the only way to find the phone is to do a manual search for it. It’s still listed as available for sale, but clicking on the “buy” button redirects to a page which screams in bold letters that “the selection you made is unavailable at this time.“ Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam recently bemoaned that his company was unable to keep the device in stock thanks in part to a shortage of AMOLED displays from Samsung. But still…pulling the phone from the website because it’s sold out? That’s just strange.

Anything you want to tell us, Verizon?

UPDATE: According to Verizon, this is all just one big misunderstanding. Verizon is now giving away free 2GB microSD cards with the sale of each Droid Incredible. Because of this, the order number on the website had to be changed. This didn’t happen right away thus explaining perceived lack of availability.

How to get Hulu running on Android 2.2, for now

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1. A perfect combination for combination for a little Hulu on the go, right? Not quite, as Hulu has decided to block videos (for legal reasons) when it detects a mobile device, but it turns out there is a surprisingly simple workaround. As Absolutely Android explains, all you have to do is make Hulu think you’re using a desktop browser, which can be done simply by entering “about:debug” in the address bar and switching the UAString setting from Android to desktop. The only downside to the trick is that you’ll now also get the full desktop version of the Hulu site (and any other site, until you switch it back), and there’s a better than decent chance that Hulu will close this loophole before you can finish your first episode of Kojak.

Android 2.2 being pushed out to the Nexus One?

Monday, May 24th, 2010

We have not been able to verify this ourselves yet, but reports have been coming in since late last night about Android 2.2 going live on the Nexus One. TechCrunch’s MG Siegler is also reporting his handset has received the update, by being greeted with the upgrade prompt while charging his handset. How is it looking out there for everyone else in Froyo land?

GP2X gaming handheld modded with D-pad, PSP batteries (video)

Friday, May 21st, 2010

These days, it’s the Pandora making waves in the world of handheld emulation, but GamePark’s GP2X could arguably be credited with starting the whole phenomenon. John Grayson recently decided that the original simply wasn’t keeping up with the times, however, and decided to swap out a joystick for a more traditional D-pad. Moreover, he yanked those weak AA batteries and shoehorned a pair of PSP Li-ion cells in there instead, boosting his SNES play time to just over four hours on a full charge. Thankfully for you, neither tweak seems all that difficult to implement, and the sub-10 minute clip waiting after the break does a rather outstanding job of giving you the play-by-play. So yeah, scram!

Rogers releases the Motorola QUENCH for $50

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

While it’s more like the Toyota of Android smartphones as opposed to the Cadillac, Canadians who want to take Google’s mobile OS for a spin should look no further than the Motorola QUENCH. Available today from Rogers, the QUENCH is simply T-Mobile CLIQ XT with an even more questionable name. Of course this means that all of its specs — 3.1? capacitive HVGA display, 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, HSDPA and MOTOBLUR atop of Android 1.5 — are the same, and can be yours for as little as $49.99 on contract. Anyone biting?

Analyst expects Apple to burn through 24 million next-gen iPhones in 2010

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

It’s not even official, but that’s not stopping Digitimes Research analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from estimating that Foxconn — manufacturer of the next iPhone — will deliver some 24 million units to Apple in 2010. According to Kuo, an initial shipment of 4.5 million devices will be followed throughout the rest of the year with 19.5 million additional units. Kuo also echoed John Gruber’s claims that the iPhone will have a 960×640 IPS display with FFS technology for a higher quality image with better visibility under direct sunlight, and that the phone will have 512MB of memory, or double the memory of the iPhone 3GS. This assertion is at odds with the findings of a recent next-gen iPhone prototype teardown which revealed the iPhone to be using the same 1GHz A4 processor with 256MB of system DRAM as the iPad. A more capacious battery is said to be included thanks to a 33% thinner display. Anyone else going to be on pins and needles for the next 21 days until WWDC?
