Click here to find out more! Fido launches the BlackBerry Curve 8520

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Hear that noise? That’s Fido saying goodbye to 2006 and hello to… 2009? Fido has finally caved in and introduced a modern-ish BlackBerry with today’s release of the Curve 8520. Attractively priced at $50 with a 3-year voice and data contract, the 8520 is also available to pre-paid customers for the one-time cost of $400. Throw in a CityFido plan and data add-on and you really can’t argue against this device if you’re in the market for an affordable smartphone. You know, unless you care about 3G.

webOS 1.4 coming to Pres and Pixis on the 25th?

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

The rumored February 15th date for the rollout of webOS 1.4 has come and gone with nary a sighting of the latest OS offering from Palm. Now that the tentative launch date has slipped, another tentative launch date has popped up to take its place. This second rumored date reportedly comes from a source within Verizon Wireless who claims that webOS 1.4 will now rollout on February 25th. Palm did say that webOS 1.4 was expected to arrive in February so this new date sounds highly plausible and if it turns out to be wrong you always have your choice of February 26th, 27th or 28th. Let’s hope Palm can get this update out the door within its proposed time frame; if it slips into March, Palm may have some explaining to do.

Nexus One gets HTC Sense and Flash 10 courtesy of a HTC Desire ROM

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Owners of a Nexus One not afraid of flashing a ROM can shake things up by installing a leaked HTC Desire ROM with Sense UI that has been carefully prepared and packaged for your Google handset. The ROM is an Alpha release that may be a bit unstable for everyday use but it gives those  users who need to be on the forefront of technology a sneak peek at what is coming for Android in the upcoming months. One surprise included in the ROM is the presence of Adobe Flash 10.1, an inclusion that suggests the deployment of Flash for Android may be right around the corner. Interested parties can head on over to Modaco to get all the details on downloading and installing this custom ROM for the Nexus One. If you are just stopping by, you may have to wait a few hours though, as the download has been pulled while an improved version is being prepared.

Best Buy kicks off Motorola Devour pre-sale, no rebate required

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

You’ll still have to wait until February 25th to actually get your hands on one, but those not wanting to take any chances on missing out on the Motorola Devour can now head down to their local Best Buy or Best Buy Mobile store and reserve one starting today. The only catch is that you’ll have to buy a $50 Best Buy gift card to hold your spot for the phone, but the good news is that you won’t have to deal with any of those pesky mail-in rebates — just a simple instant discount at the check-out. Curiously though, while Best Buy will gladly sell you a $50 gift card, it’s still not saying exactly much the phone itself will actually cost — here’’s hoping we hear more about that before you.

Motorola publishes schedule of Android upgrades for its handsets, steers clear of specifics

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Remember last week, when Motorola said it was releasing an Android 2.1 update for the Droid, but then totally didn’t? Moto tried to “explain” the situation in forums, but didn’t really, edited its long-erroneous Facebook post retroactively, and ended up breaking a lot of hearts. Well, now Motorola has a new “Software Upgrade News” chart detailing planned upgrades for its Android devices. While this is certainly helpful going forward, the lack of clarification on the Droid update doesn’t exactly solve the confusion that got them into this mess: Motorola is merely saying that the OTA upgrade will roll out “soon.” As previously promised, we’re also going to be getting a Cliq update to 2.1 eventually as well, which is now being pegged for Q2. Sadly, upgrades for non-US handsets are decidedly less expedient — or not even assured — but at least we’ve got something.

GeeksPhone One lands in France for a hands-on

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Plenty of other Android phones have come and gone since the GeeksPhone One was announced way back in July of last year, but the phone is now finally available in Europe, and the folks at Android France have managed to get their hands on what seems to be one of the first ones. Unfortunately, the device is looking a tad less polished than some of the earlier shots we’ve seen suggested, and the device’s specs don’t seem to have seen any upgrades during its prolonged launch (definitely no Snapdragon here). There’s also not much in the way of actual impressions of the phone just yet (Android France is promising a full review), but there are plenty of pictures to keep you busy in the meantime at the link below.

Google’s Nexus One ‘equipment recovery fee’ slashed to $150, still a pain

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

So the good news here is that Google appears to have heard the cries for help, having taken a chainsaw to its brutal $350 “equipment recovery fee” that had been lumped on top of T-Mobile’s $200 ETF for subsidized Nexus One contracts canceled in the first 120 days. The bad news, though, is that it still exists at all — a hairy precedent for an industry being watched with eagle eyes by the FCC right now. The company has knocked $200 off the fee, bringing it down to $150; in other words, if you break your contract, you’ll pay the same ETF that Verizon now charges on its “advanced devices.” Whether that was a deliberate move to let ‘em say that they’re no more expensive than Verizon is unclear, but let’s be honest: $350 is extreme, $550 was highway robbery. At least we’re going in the right direction.

Windows Mobile 6.5.3 details emerge

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

With the introduction of the Sony Ericsson Aspen, Windows Mobile took a small jump forward to version 6.5.3. This latest version includes a few notable features, including capacitive touchscreen support which will cause all non-HD2 owners to toss their stylii into the air and jump for joy. Other changes include:

  • Platform to enable multitouch
  • Touch controls throughout system (no need for stylus)
  • Consistent Navigation
  • Horizontal scroll bar replaces tabs (think settings>system>about screen)
  • Magnifier to bring touch support to legacy applications
  • Simplified out-of-box experience with fewer steps
  • Drag and drop icons on Start Screen
  • Browser page load time decreased and memory management improved
  • Browser pan & flick gestures smoothed and zoom & rotation speed increased
  • Updated runtime tools (.NET CF 3.5, SQL CE 3.1)
  • Arabic read/write document support
  • Watson (error reporting) improvements and bug fixes

Thus far, the Aspen is the only handset to run this latest version of the Microsoft’s mobile operating system and we may have to wait until MWC 2010 for additional 6.5.3 handsets to emerge and updates for current handsets to be confirmed. Until then, Windows Mobile 6.5.3 is an SE exclusive.
